Abstract

The dialogue project aims at designing man-machine dialogue systems which present a strong linguistic component. This objective thus requires precise studies on the way language is used contextually, taking into account the different parameters related to the speaker, the dialogue setting and the task to be acheived by the dialogue.

In such a framework, it appears that both oral and written language can be seen as a privileged medium for any interaction between a man and a computer system, but also as a major way to represent the underlying knowledge concerning a specific domain or application.

Our research project thus tackles the following topics:

• fondamental and applied studies about language as a communication means. This implies research on the pragmatics of language (reference, indexicals, spatial modelling, coreferential gesture interpretation), as well as the study of the underlying lexical phenomena;
• studies and implementation of man-machine dialogue systems, with a specific focus on assistance machanisms and on the possible architectures of such systems;
• studies on speech production taking into account most recent theories of phonetics and articulatory modelling.
