Highlights of the year
Bruno Lévy obtained a Starting Grant from the European Research Council for his project GoodShape . The aim of the project is to study the problem of the optimal sampling of shapes. The project was one of the 300 funded projects, out of 10000 submissions (European wide, all disciplines of science). The 1.1 million Euros grant will allow to fund four Ph.D. theses, two post-docs, one software developer and one international workshop during the project (5 years, August 2008 - August 2013).
We proposed this year a new method to design tangent vector fields over surfaces, a fundamental problem in geometry processing, texture generation and surface fitting. Our work was published in ACM TOG and presented at Siggraph 2008. The main contribution is to exactly control the orientation field topology by extending the Poincaré-Hopf theorem to orientations with symmetries, and by explicitly representing the topological degrees of freedom. Our method was also used to produce some figures of the book topology and its applications , by William F. Basener (Rochester Institute of Technology, school of Mathematical Sciences).
